ABSTRACT
A single specimen belonging to the family Carangidae was first collected in Gangjeong dong Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do Island on 2 October, 2024, by angling. This individual was identified as Caranx tille based on morphological traits as follows: Dorsal profile of head strongly curved (C. sexfasciatus: straight); black spots on upper margin of opercle, in adults, at least 1/2 the diameter of pupil (C. sexfasciatus: under 1/3 the diameter of pupil). A total of 618 base pairs sequences of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I region was analyzed; we found it closely matched to the Caranx tille (K2P distance=0.16%). We suggest the new Korean name of Caranx tille ‘Keun jeom-jul-jeon-gaeng-i’ because it has a bigger black spot on the upper end of opercle.
